5 health problems your dentist can find in your mouth

September 2, 2015 //  by DairyLane

As good dental health reflects good overall health, your dentist can tell you a lot more than just the condition of your teeth. Your routine dental checkup can reveal different health problems, and sometimes may also prevent them.

1) Tooth decay

The most obvious problem your dentist will detect is tooth decay. Cavities are actually among the most common health problems. If not treated, they can get bigger and eventually cause pain and require tooth removal or a root canal treatment.

2) Heart disease

A direct link between dental health and heart health has been proven by numerous studies. Your dentist can detect heart disease if he/she finds periodontitis (advanced gum disease), as the bacteria in your gums can travel to your heart causing heart problems.

3) Diabetes

There is a strong connection between oral health and diabetes, as inflammation in the mouth can affect the body’s ability to control blood sugar. Bleeding gums and loose teeth can be a warning sign of diabetes, and any infection in your mouth can make your diabetes worse and may contribute to the risk of stroke. Fortunately, managing gum disease can help control diabetes.

4) Osteoporosis

As osteoporosis weakens the bones, your dentist may find changes in the bone supporting your teeth, which may cause loose teeth or a receding gum line. Although the link between osteoporosis and periodontitis has not been confirmed, some studies have shown that people with osteoporosis are more likely to have gum disease.

5) Anorexia or Bulimia

Eating disorders can contribute to serious dental problems that cause great discomfort. Repeated vomiting, which is associated with eating disorders, damages teeth as acid destroys the inner part of the teeth leaving them thin and weak. Your dentist will see the effects of acid on the teeth surface. Teeth may become brittle, thin and sensitive. Color and shape may also change.
